Hasibul Alam
Although social capital is an old notion, it only became a topic of scholarly and policy debate in the 1990s. Its significance in explaining economic and social issues has been widely debated in recent years. During the last decade, there has been a major increase in the literature on theoretical and empirical elements of social capital. Social capital is centered on social relationships, and its key components include social networks, civic involvement, reciprocity standards, and generalized trust. It is defined broadly as a collective asset consisting of shared norms, values, beliefs, trust, networks, social ties, and institutions that promote collaboration and collective action for mutual gain. The study is conducted to find out the current condition level of trust have towards teachers, administrative officials, peers, students and general people. This article explores the nexus between Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming, and Bangladesh’s democracy and development using historical method, and development indicators. Sheikh Hasina returned home on 17 May 1981 defying all obstracles of the then government after five-year-and-nine-month of exile following 15 August assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members. This study shows that Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming is of utmost important in the history of democracy and development of Bangladesh. Because, her return and subsequent democratic movements had forced the military dictator to hand over power to the caretaker government for holding the parliamentary election. Later, securing fourth term as the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina has made the country a role model of development in the world. Bangladesh has now a glorified story of growth and development aspiring to be an upper-middle income country by 2031 because of her visionary leadership, and strictness to fulfil the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This study suggests rooting out corruption, reducing rate of unemployment, combating price hike of essentials, and strengthening soundness of democracy to make the country ‘Sonar Bangla’ by 2041.
2023-12-31T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Md. Reaching a consensus on wages in a maze of conflicting interests is not straightforward. Employers and employees are the two contested parties that need a level playing field for collective bargaining to establish industrial democracy. In effective bargaining, a win-win situation requires each side's needs: from the employer, an increase in productivity and profit, and from the employee, a decent and more secure life. However, there is some evidence that theminimum wage policy might have adverse effects on employment. This study employs a qualitative approach using ILO reports, journals, newspaper articles, research firm reports, and key informant interviews to analyse the effects of changes in minimum wage determination in the readymade garments industry in Bangladesh. The key findings indicate that worker and RMG owner group representatives must agree on a compromising negotiation to develop an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable minimum wage policy, particularly in the ready-made garment sector. The significant policy implication of the study is to suggest the enforcement of various pre- and post-socioeconomic factors of minimum wage determination to ensure a decent standard of living for Bangladeshi low-paid garment workers. This study also thinks that if minimum wage compromising negotiations fail, there will be chaos in the garment industry in the coming days.
2023-12-31T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Muhammad Saddam Hussain Hussain
